Summer Camp

The Brothers host a "free garage sale" each Friday morning in their backyard where the local community can shop and obtain the things they need for their families and homes. All the items in the garage sale come from donations by residents of the local gated communities and other folks who have more to share.  The people generally are very generous and strongly support the ministry of the Brothers.

Maria Teresa Cisneros, an Associate of the Christian Brothers gives a mini sermon on Sunday's Gospel at the pluga!

Women who come to shop at the garage sale often bring their children with them.  They do not have baby sitters available;  the children usually enjoy the excitement of the day! Older ones prowl around for toys that appeal to them, of course.

At the summer camp, the children participate in a number of fun and educational activities, including being taught how to make clay sculpture at the local Bonita Springs Art League.  There are fifty or more children enrolled in the camp each summer.  We try to take them to places that are both educational and enjoyable.  And there are always  trips to the water park during the eight week camp.

The summer camp also takes trips to local nature parks.

The summer camp marched in the city's Fourth of July parade. Here boys lean out the window waving their flags in one of the two "Los Hermanos" buses used for camp.

Older children in the summer camp program are required to do a group project on a topic that affects their lives such as teenage pregnancy and STDs, drugs and alcohol,  or violence. They present their projects to the rest of the group. Here a girl in camp researches on a computer in the Brothers' house for her project on depression and suicide.

Volunteers and Associates of the Brothers paint and restore a house donated to them which will become a part of the Iona House Corporation.

Volunteers prepare Thanksgiving food boxes to be given out to members of the local community.

Each year, the Brothers sponsor a Christmas gathering for the local community where they can get gifts for their children.
